SPF, DKIM and DMARC (2024 Changes)

(DKIM Changes set by Email/Domain Providers)

What is DMARC?

  • Purpose: DMARC is designed to give email domain owners the ability to protect their domain from unauthorized use (spoofing).
  • How it Works: DMARC builds on two existing mechanisms, SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), to authenticate the identity of the email sender.

Why Should You Set Up DMARC?

  • Enhanced Security: Protect your domain from phishing scams and spoofing.
  • Improved Deliverability: Emails are more likely to end up in the recipient's inbox, not the spam folder.
  • Visibility: You'll get reports showing who is sending email from your domain.

Steps to Set Up DMARC

  1. Confirm SPF and DKIM Are in Place: Before setting up DMARC, ensure you already have SPF and DKIM set up.
  2. Create a DMARC Record: Create a DMARC TXT record in your DNS settings.
    • Example: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:reports@yourdomain.com
  3. Testing Mode: It's often good to start in 'none' mode (p=none) to collect data without affecting your emails.
  4. Analyze Reports: You'll get XML reports emailed that show the status of emails sent from your domain.
  5. Policy Implementation: After monitoring, switch to a stricter policy like p=quarantine or p=reject.

Things to Consider

  • 3rd Party Impact: Implementing DMARC may affect third-party services that send emails on your behalf. You'd need to make sure they are also DMARC compliant.

I hope this clears things up a bit! While we provide the tools for SPF through our SendGrid integration, DMARC is something you'll need to manage on your end. Still, we're here to help if you have any questions.
